Works Well Enough – I always thought of universal sockets as a bit of gimmick or a cheat for people who lack the correct wrenches or sockets. After playing with this a bit, I have to admit that I was MOSTLY wrong. This actually will grip a bolt well enough that I think it will work in most cases. Also it can hold an unusual size in a way that a regular wrench just cannot. Honestly I would rather use this than an adjustable wrench in most cases.

Handy for unique situations. – I tried this out on some stuff in the garage to see how it would work. One thing I immediately realized is that it will not work on anything that would require anywhere close to a deep socket. This will only work on shallow stuff. Also, if you don’t get it centered, the whole thing will roll around in circles. It needs to be centered well to stay stable. I don’t think it’s going to be good for anything heavy duty. Really, these things are meant for light duty, shallow work as well as some unique situations. I saw a friend one time use a similar product on a screw hook. He shoved the universal socket onto the hook end, and it tightened it into the wood. Stuff like that is another example how these can be handy. I’ll keep it around, but I doubt I reach for it too often. Still, it might be nice to have available.
